It depicts a woman in a colourful dress and top hat, modelled on Mattis’s wife.
In 1905, a group of young French painters, represented by Mattis, exhibited a number of works in the Paris Autumn Salon, known as Fauvism because of their bold use of color and their unconventional style.
The first time I saw this picture, it made me feel very bright colors. And then there’s a lady in a top hat and a dress. The background is also made up of many colors. Even though Mattis was using so many colors, he didn’t look at them promiscuously. His wife’s face was pointed and her features perfectly straight. Overall, it looks gorgeous. But I don’t know. Her wife seems a little upset. Or serious.
