First I used blue-brown as well as red and some purple to blend into what looks like a black background. The technique used was a flat lay. But I didn’t want my background to be as monotonous as one color. So I added subtle colors to my background to give it a more textured look. Then I used gray to paint the whole subject, a person. You can say it’s a silhouette or a back. But I didn’t flesh it out. I used a squeegee to add various colors to this face. There are cool tones and warm tones. All kinds of colors. The dark color was chosen for the background to highlight the color, and the bright color of the face. This will make the subject stand out more.

My theme is life, and life. I added so many colors to the face of this person with no specific features because I wanted to express that everyone’s life experience is different, and the warm colors represent something lucky and happy, and the cold colors represent suffering and difficulties. Everyone’s life is not all smooth sailing. So he/she doesn’t have a specific look because he/she can represent anyone. The color of the face can represent each person’s life experience. It can also represent the emotions that we have and express. It could be happy it could be sad. No one is perfect, and no one is exactly the same. Everyone’s life is different. What we need is to add unique colors to our lives, unique experiences to enrich our own lives. Just like what I have painted, add color to it.

This semester’s course has taught me to express things and emotions I want to express in an abstract way. It made me not to use figurative, realistic images to paint. Painting does not have to be very realistic. In fact, abstract things are also beautiful and can express the same emotions and things.
