The unit in this week’s book is about the human body in art. Art in recording images of the individual body includes emotions, memories, rights, beliefs and more. The audience feels the same as the artist. The examples given are installations and paintings. But I was impressed by the installation art. Portrait of Ross in Los Angeles – Untitled. Portrait of Ross in Los Angeles is a conceptual art style work created by Felix Gonzalez-Torres in 1991, which belongs to the contemporary art period with the theme of installation works, the size of Portrait of Ross in Los Angeles, used, and currently the work is kept by the Museum of Chicago Art. everyday into profound contemplation of love and loss.
Untitled (portrait of Ross in Los Angeles) is an allegory representing the artist’s partner, Ross Laycock, who died of AIDS-related illness in 1991. The installation consists of 175 pounds of candy, which corresponds to Ross’ ideal weight. Encouraging viewers to take a piece of candy, and to reduce the amount similar to Ross’s weight loss before his death and suffering, Gonzalez-Torres stipulates that the pile should be constantly replenished, thus metaphorically giving eternal life. 1991 Ross died of AIDS, the same year the loss of his lover Torres was so devastating that, looking back on his lover fading away, Torres made an artwork entitled “Untitled (Portrait of Ross in Los Angeles)”: a pile of colorful fruit hard candies in the corner, the weight of which is Ross’s weight when healthy, visitors can take as much as they want, while the number and weight of the candies are slowly shrinking …… Ross’s originally robust Torres used portraits to name the works without faces, no matter what Ross became his best face eventually remained in Torres’ heart, at this moment Torres did not collapse because of the death of his lover, but calmly expressed his thoughts about him, because Torres understood in his heart that he himself had contracted the same disease as Ross, and would soon meet with Ross again – —–
He later created a similar installation, replacing the candy with fortune cookies.
