(Henri Matisse,1869—1954)
He and Picasso, two of the most important painters of the 20th century, were born to a family of medicine and grain traders in Le Cato, in northern Picardy.
After studying law from 1882 to 1887, he gave up his law career to study painting, enrolled in the preparatory classes at Julian College under William Adolfo Bugroman, and entered the Academy of Fine Arts in 1892, where he studied in the studio of the symbolist painter Gustave Moreau.
Gustave Moreau’s subjective exposition of painting colors had a great influence on Mattis. According to Gustave Moreau, “the Hue of beauty can not be obtained by copying nature. The color of painting can only be obtained by thinking, imagining and dreaming” .
After leaving the Academy of fine arts, he was influenced by SIGNAC’s pointillist neo-futurism in luxury, tranquility and joy (1904) , the painting is based on Baudelaire’s poem a tour of the island of Seti: “where everything is so beautiful and orderly, luxurious, serene and full of joy” , and it shows the artist as a colorist
