RICHARD SERRA DRAWING A REtRoSpECtIVE

artist statement

“Drawing is more than lines or marks on a piece of paper. It is perceptual, experiential, and conceptual; it is a way to see, to feel, and to think.”

This retrospective is a chronological presentation of Serra’s diverse drawing practice and his innovative exploration of techniques, supports, and means of making and presentation. Together, the works in the show reflect the artist’s dynamic understanding of process and spatial percep- tion in relationship to drawing, affirming the simple yet profound notion that drawing is a temporal art. It is a body coming into contact with a sur- face and making a mark. The drag of pencil on paper, the gesture of graphite swept across a surface, the pressure of a block of paintstick pressed against a support, all are traces of touch—indications of physical movement in time, across space.

For this big picture, I used to touch, curl, rub, dappled things. And put them together. On the left, I drew a flame. It’s dark. The light-colored ones above are just the way I rub them, turning them into gas. I also use different techniques to represent smoke. And on the inside of the smoke was added some of the plants seen on the beach. I drew it in detail. In this creation, I learned to use verbs, to use the body to free the large-scale painting. I learned that on the beach. The painting also involves the use of one’s own body to dramatically show and depict. In the process of painting, the description of the body itself is a kind of painting. Art is made of beauty. When I use these verbs, I am painting in an immersive way, instead of just sitting in a chair and drawing as usual. It’s a big piece of paper, and you have to stand up and apply it to the body. You Don’t have to think about what you want to paint, you just have to think about the action you want to use in this picture. This mode, let me experience the painting of the simple, as well as the body to express the form of the picture.
